New user interface for a medical device in the dental field.

W&H is one of the world’s leading companies in the development and manufacture of medical technology products.

We developed modern touchscreen software for a dental device from W&H that organizes complex functions in a clear, structured way and makes them intuitive to use.

The focus was on modern user guidance, capacitive touch controls, and new interaction options such as swipe gestures, drag-and-drop, and flexible configurations.

Modern controls for dental equipment

Starting point

Dental equipment must be precisely controllable while remaining easy to use in everyday practice. A wide range of functions, settings, and treatment steps must be managed within a limited timeframe and under demanding conditions.

Especially for devices used in medical settings, it is important to have a user interface that provides guidance and makes complex procedures easy to understand.

Task

A new user interface was to be developed for a medical device used in the dental field, building on the existing control system.

Key requirements included clear user guidance, modern touch controls, and the ability to flexibly configure functions—including gestures, swipes, and drag-and-drop.

Implementation

In collaboration with W&H, design and software prototypes were developed to evaluate the operating logic, user experience, and technical feasibility at an early stage.

This led to the development of touchscreen software based on C++ and Qt, which presents complex functions in a structured manner and makes operating the dental device significantly more intuitive.

Highlights

Scan Feature: Scan instead of documenting later—right in the middle of treatment.

Halo LED
Software that not only controls pixels but also visual signals on the device.

Modular Expansion The interface adapts depending on which module is connected.

Built-in Wi-Fi
Ready for updates, connectivity, and digital services.

Touch & Hygiene
Seamless, intuitive, and easy to clean.

A statement
from the field

Documentation directly within the workflow

The built-in scanning feature allows you to record the materials used directly on the device —such as implants or biomaterials.

This reduces manual follow-up work, supports accurate documentation, and enhances traceability. As a result, a single scan becomes a digital process that significantly lightens the workload in daily practice and operating room routines.

Even more intuitive.
Even more modern.

The image shows the evolution of an existing device control system into an even more modern touch interface.

The underlying logic was not simply replaced, but specifically improved, structured more clearly, and adapted to new user interfaces.

This makes functions easier to grasp, settings simpler to use, and complex procedures in everyday clinical and surgical practice even more straightforward to follow.

The Project Timeline

1. Starting Point & Technology Shift

The discontinuation of a hardware platform made it necessary to switch to a new chip.
This not only created a new technical foundation but also opened up opportunities for modern user interfaces, connectivity, and expansions.

2. Concept & Architecture

In collaboration with W&H, we defined the UI concept, technical requirements, and variants featuring Wi-Fi, a camera, and cloud connectivity.
At the same time, key architectural decisions were made regarding Embedded Linux, .NET, and the integration of modern interfaces.

3. Prototyping & Validation

Desktop simulations, Wi-Fi prototypes, and cloud prototypes made it possible to validate technical approaches at an early stage.
This allowed product management and development to test the software before the final hardware was fully available.

4. Implementation & Further Development

The design was implemented with pixel-perfect accuracy, special cases were resolved, and initial field tests were conducted with doctors.
This feedback continues to inform further development to this day—including for additional product variants, licensees, and a broader rollout of the software.
